The New Yorker

This picture is a bright-colored cartoon. In the picture there is a woman with short brown hair and she was wearing an orange hard hat, blue button up shirt, blue jeans and brown work boots. She has a light blue box next to her leg. Her shirt is undone and she is nursing a bald baby. The baby is wearing a yellow shirt and has grey pants. The woman and the baby are sitting in the air on a metal construction site. There are two silhouettes of construction workers behind the woman. The men are working with a crane that has a hook. Behind them is a tall brown building with a lot of windows. The sky is also orange and has small white clouds in the background.

The woman has more of a masculine build- her arms look strong, not small or frail. Her face has a blank expression, she is not smiling or frowning. Her eyes are looking down at the baby that she is holding. She is sitting in a relaxed, open-legged position with one foot on the metal and the other foot dangling. The baby seems calm and focused with little movement. The baby’s hand is resting on the woman’s breast and it is feeding. The baby’s feet are resting on the woman’s leg.

This image was published the day after Mother’s Day in 1998. It is a spin off of the famous 1932 image, “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper”. This image is nearly the opposite of the image The New Yorker posted. It is in black and white and of multiple boys sitting on the construction site. I believe the image that The New Yorker posted was for an appreciation of Mother’s and their duties on Mother’s Day that year.

A lot of things were repeated in this image and/or stood out. The work site with the women breastfeeding was a big anomaly that stood out to me. Another anomaly was that she was multitasking with a construction job as such.

I think this magazine is focusing on the big topics in the world that should be talked about more. After seeing this picture and the other pictures listed, I think they could also just be trying to show people's efforts to make change in this world.

More specifically, I think this picture is about a mother who would go to any length for her child but it could also be her only option to bring her child with her wherever she goes. I also think it could be about a hard working mother who never gets a break, but it could also be about a woman who is simply just trying to provide for her child and her job at the same time.
