Poster Child Reflection

In “From Poster Child to Protester” Laura Hershey (poet, journalist, popular speaker, feminist, and disability rights activist/ consultant) examines the idea of how the telethon that raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) does not do what they say they’ll do with the money that is donated. The whole theme of the telethon was to “raise money to find a cure” when the money should have been raised to help with assistance for people who have MD; this leaves people wondering where all of the money goes once it’s donated because there still is no cure. Within 26 years of the telethon, over $600 million was raised, and no one knows where that money is. Hershey Was on this teleton herself, but they scripted what she said so the audience would feel some type of “pity” for her so they would donate, and ultimately the telethon was producing false advertisement. Most people with disabilities aren’t wasting their lives hoping for a “cure” like those people said they do. Most of the time they try to live their lives to the fullest they’re able to and their family supports them- they are not a burden to society like is also advertised. After reading the article, I wish they found out where the money was going because I’m still very curious..
